Tersebutlah sebuah perusahaan bernama Android, Inc. di Palo Alto, California, Amerika Serikat yang didirikan oleh Andy Rubin, sedang membuat perangkat lunak untuk ponsel. Ini adalah perusahaan kecil yang tidak dikenal. Andy yang pernah diwawancarai oleh Business Week pada tahun 2003, mengatakan bahwa dia sedang mengembangkan sebuah software untuk mobile device dan ponsel yang sangat potensial dan peka terhadap lokasi dan preferensi pemiliknya.
Tahun 2005 Android, Inc. dibeli Google, dan Andy dipasang sebagai direktur mobile platform-nya. Ini menyebabkan dimulainya desas-desus bahwa Google berencana untuk memasuki pasar ponsel.
Pada bulan November 2007, terbentuklan Open Handset Alliance yang merupakan konsorsium dari beberapa perusahaan : Broadcom Corporation, Google, HTC, Intel, LG, Marvell Technology Group, Motorola, Nvidia, Qualcomm, Samsung Electronics, Sprint Nextel, T-Mobile dan Texas Instruments. Mereka sepakat untuk membuat open standard bagi mobilephone. Pada hari yang sama, mereka mengumumkan produk software pertama mereka, yaitu Android yang berbasis Linux kernel versi 2.6.
Bulan Desember 2008, bergabunglah 14 perusahaan lainnya yaitu : ARM Holdings, Atheros Communications, Asustek Computer Inc, Garmin Ltd, PacketVideo, Softbank, Sony Ericsson, Toshiba Corp dan Vodafone Group Plc. Hal ini merupakan langkah besar dalam sejarah Android untuk menjadi leader dalam sistem operasi mobilephone. Pada akhirnya Google meluncurkan smartphone Nexus yang menggunakan open source Android mobile. Perangkat ini diproduksi oleh Taiwan’s HTC Corporation dan telah launching pada Januari 2010.
Hingga sekarang kepopuleran android melesat merambah ke berbagai merk ponsel dan tablet. Kalau pernah mendengar atau menggunakan Samsung Galaxy atau Sony Ericsson Xperia 10, itulah salah satu bukti kehebohan Android.
Lantas, apa sebenarnya kelebihan Android sehingga diprediksi akan mengalahkan Blackberry? Blackberry hanya kuat di fitur messagingnya (itu sebabnya saya tidak pernah tertarik sama Blackberry). Sedangkan Android mempunyai kelebihan di fitur multimedia. Hebatnya lagi, karena programnya open source, kita bisa mendapatkan ribuan program di Android Market secara gratis, meskipun ada juga program profesional yang berbayar. Hanya dengan mengakses Android Market via ponsel atau tablet, kita bisa download program yang diinginkan dan langsung install. Jika bosan, tinggal uninstall lalu cari yang lain .

Salah satu dari sekian banyak fungsi android gadget baik pc tablet maupun ponsel android, adalah kemampuannya untuk disinkronisasikan dengan perangkat lain terutama laptop atau pc sehingga mampu melakukan fungsi tertentu. Berikut ini tutorial memanfaatkan pc tablet atau ponsel android untuk presentasi dengan mengendalikan komputer dari jarak jauh.
Ternyata ada banyak software yang free maupun berbayar untuk memanfaatkan android sebagai media pengontrol jarak jauh. Dari sekitar lima jenis android free software dengan rating tinggi yang telah saya coba, menurut saya yang paling gampang terapannya adalah PC Remote. Jika mau mencoba, Anda memerlukan dua jenis software PC Remote. Satu diinstal di pc tablet atau ponsel sebagai client, sedangkan satu software lagi diinstal di komputer atau laptop sebagai server.
Program ini bisa dijalankan dengan koneksitas bluetooth maupun wifi. Tetapi menurut pengalaman saya lebih mudah menggunakan bluetooth. Untuk mulai menjalankannya:
- Aktifkan koneksitas bluetooth pada komputer dan android gadget Anda
- Jalankan PC Remote server pada komputer. Untuk menjalankan program server ini bahkan Anda tidak perlu menginstal. Cukup dobel klik langsung pada PCRemote.exe. Lihat screenshot berikut.
- Jalankan PC Remote dari android Anda
- Setelah muncul menu seperti screenshot berikut ini, silahkan tap (sentuh) pada Discovery Server
- Setelah server (komputer) terdeteksi via bluetooth lalu lakukan pairing dan gadget Anda telah sepenuhnya mengendalikan komputer.
Lihat screenshot di atas. Jika ingin menggunakan touchpad, Anda tinggal memilih melakukan tap pada menu Touchpad pada gadget. Jika Anda gerakkan ujung jari pada gadget, maka kursor di komputer akan bergerak sesuai gerakan ujung jari. Untuk menjalankan suatu program Anda hanya perlu melakukan double tap pada gadget dan komputer akan menjalankan program tersebut. Demikian pula jika Anda tap pada Right Click, maka akan muncul popup menu di layar komputer seperti ketika Anda melakukan klik kanan pada mouse.
Dengan koneksitas ini Anda bisa melakukan kontrol penuh untuk menjalankan komputer dari jarak jauh. Mulai presentasi dengan Power Point, menjalankan audio video, mengetik, hingga mematikan komputer, bisa Anda lakukan dari jarak jauh.
Bayangkan jika Anda sedang melakukan presentasi di depan audiens dengan membawa sebuah pc tablet, sedangkan laptop berada jauh dari Anda terhubung ke proyektor tanpa seorang pun asisten.
